Friends,
I know and understand the New Orleans Public Schools. I am a public school graduate. I was a public school teacher. All of my children went to public schools, and after Katrina I led the founding of Audubon Charter Schools. Until recently, I served as President of the Ben Franklin High School Board. I have been committed to our schools here in our home of New Orleans my entire life.
I know the challenges our kids face in our schools, but I also believe in the possibilities. That’s why I’m writing you today.
I’m proud to announce I’ll be seeking to lead our schools towards a better future as a candidate for Orleans Parish School Board - District 6. Election Day is November 3.
I’ve always believed in fighting for systemic reform – but not in change for change’s sake. Instead, I believe in change that puts kids first.
Our public school system is moving forward on so many fronts, but there is still so much to be done.
I remember the crumbling buildings and the empty bookshelves; the beleaguered teachers that lacked resources and support; the promise in too many kids squandered by a system that didn’t work for them.
We’ve made progress. But the challenges are far from over.
The district is different now. The work of many parents, advocates, teachers, and school leaders has built a more fiscally sound and more innovative school system, one in which decisions are made as close to the child as possible.
However, we still haven’t fully dismantled the inequities that persist and continue to hold our kids back.
As your next school board member, I’ll stand up for our kids at every turn.
In the midst of this COVID crisis our next school board member will have no time for on-the-job training. And there are critical issues confronting our schools, especially in the areas of excellence and equity. With my experience rebuilding the schools after Katrina, I will be ready to serve on day one.
Most of you know me also from my community activism. My life has been dedicated to advancing equity, defending civil rights, and promoting accountability. I’ve taken seriously and embraced my family’s lifelong commitment to promoting racial justice and equal rights for all.
I am standing with you now, building on our common history in promoting education and social justice, ready to make even greater progress.
Together, we can stand up for our kids – put them first and drive change to make what’s better possible. For our families, for our children, for our future.
Won’t you join me?
